Hemp oil is loaded with fiber, protein, antioxidants and a perfect balance of essential fatty acids. Never tried hemp oil before? Read on to learn some easy ways to try it out.

Here at Nutiva, we are big believers in the power of hemp. So much so in fact, that our name “Nutiva” was actually inspired by the “nut” of the hemp. Hemp is an incredible commodity that was the founding crop of our forefathers. In fact, the first president of the United States, George Washington, cultivated and valued hemp very much, and the use of hemp for rope and fiber was universal in 18th century America. Today, hemp is recognized as a valuable food source because it is one of the richest plant-based sources of fiber, a complete protein, contains the perfect balance of essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, and is full of anti-oxidants.

It is important to know that hemp is not the same as marijuana. The hemp that we use for our oil, seeds, and protein shakes is as different from marijuana as a Chihuahua is from a Labrador. Though these two animals are different varieties of the same species, they are completely different creatures. The same is true for hemp and marijuana. Hemp contains no “drug” effects, so you can enjoy the nutritional benefits of hemp with out worrying about any unwanted side-effects. Not only is hemp a drug-free superfood,  it is also an incredibly useful crop for fuel, paper, textiles and more. Tired of hemp getting such a bad rep? Find out how you can help hemp here.

If you have never tried hemp before, it’s time to change that! Hemp oil is a great way to start getting the incredible nutritional value of hemp into your life. Our hemp oil is cold-pressed, meaning all of the benefits are still intact and we never use chemicals like hexane to process the oil. We also believe that organic is the only way, so you can rest assured that our hemp oil is certified organic. Ready to try it out? Here are three simple ways to incorporate hemp oil into your life.

1. Make Salad Dressing

Nutiva’s cold-pressed hemp oil has all of its beneficial fibers, protein, and healthy fats intact, so it’s a great idea to use the oil cold for maximum benefit. Of course, you can heat hemp for an added nutty flavor to some of your favorite recipes like roasted garlic. Replacing hemp oil with olive oil in your favorite vinaigrette or other dressing is an easy way to get a tasty dressing that will satisfy your palate and give you nutritional value. It’s an incredible healthy fat that provides a warm and nutty flavor to your favorite dressing. Try out this simple and unique dressing that tops a beet and cabbage salad perfectly:

2. Add it into your juice or smoothie

Hemp oil is a remarkable addition to your smoothie or juice. You can enjoy all of the nutritional value of hemp oil by keeping it cold, and (depending on how much you use) you may not even taste it in your smoothie. Did you know that the protein found in hemp seeds is more readily absorbable by the body than the protein from meat or other protein powders? Protein is vital for repairing cells in the body, so this is great news for active folks or anyone looking to promote healthy cell repair. The next time you prepare a smoothie before or after your work out, skip the artificial protein powders and go for cold-pressed hemp oil or Nutiva’s Hemp Protein or Hempshake for a more effective protein.

Just like Nutiva’s Coconut Oil and Coconut Manna, a great way to try Hemp Oil for the first time is in your smoothie! You’ll get the added bonus of a rich plant-based source of protein, fiber and essential fatty acids.

 3. Use it as a Skin Cleanser

That’s right, oil can be used as a cleanser! Hemp oil is unique from other oils for a number of reasons. First, hemp oil has more essential fatty acids (EFA’s) than any other plant-based oil on the planet! Healthy EFA’s like omega-3 are vital to skin, nail and hair health. Though consuming hemp oil is a wonderful way to work from the inside out, you can also work from the outside in. Remember that your skin is your largest organ, so the use of hemp oil as a cleanser is a great idea. Hemp oil is also an anti-inflammatory and contains high amounts of anti-oxidants. Check out this how-to guide to learn the steps for using hemp oil as a cleanser. *Keep in mind that everyone’s chemistry and skin balance is different, so results may vary.

  1. Why does Hemp seed oil need to be kept cold? Can it become rancid?

    • The Nutiva Team says:

Hi Joey, Yes. Hemp oil needs to be refrigerated after opening to extend the life of the product and prevent it from turning rancid.

  2. Lauren Martinez says:

Hi, I wanted to know of ways to discreetly put hemp oil in my kids food. They hate the taste. If they even slightly detect it, they refuse. I want them to have all the health benefits. Is there anything I can mix it with to counteract the flavor without destroying the healing compounds?

    • The Nutiva Team says:

      Hi Lauren,
You might try using hempseeds instead. They have a nice nutty flavor that people who like almonds or pine nuts tend to enjoy a lot. Our Hemp Oil comes from cold-pressed hemp seeds, so you’ll get getting the same nutritional benefits from the seeds as from the oil.

  7. HI, Yes I love this stuff I keep it in the refrigerator and I also keep my grapeseed oil in there as well.. As for my almond oil etc I bought it in dark bottles so not a lot of light gets to it.. I have been looking for dark bottles for my stuff in the frig but so far they are to expensive.. I just take some out a bit and put it on my face or skin after it has gotten warm.. I also use it in smoothies and sneak it into anything I can just a tad is all you need it lasts forever.

Hi Peggy! We recommend using our hemp oil raw or in low-heat cooking (225 degrees or below). Thanks for your question!
