The Nutiva Story
Bringing Passionate Ideals to the Marketplace
Nutiva began in 1999 as an idea in the mind of John W. Roulac, the author of successful books on home composting and industrial hemp. With his best-selling book Backyard Composting (over a million copies sold) and setting up of 700 municipal home-composting programs, John had jumpstarted the modern home-composting movement in the early 1990s.
Popularizing Hemp Foods

Nutiva introduced America’s first hemp food bar Nutiva introduced America’s first hemp food bar [lose the photo of the bar] at a time when the ecological benefits and extraordinary nutritional value of hemp foods were little known. The hemp bars earned Nutiva a welcome place on the shelves of health food stores across the nation. Nutiva then went on to introduce other superfoods such as hemp oil, shelled hemp seeds, and hemp protein powder—named Best New Supplement at the Natural Products Expo Show in Washington, DC, the year it debuted.
Defusing Government Backlash
Nutiva’s success in the marketplace sparked a government backlash based on prejudice and misinformation dating from the 1930s. In 1999 drug enforcement and US Customs agencies seized hemp food shipments from Canada in the mistaken belief that hemp foods were drug-related. In a unified effort with customers and the entire industrial hemp industry, Nutiva launched a grassroots campaign and a challenge in the courts that resulted in the end of the government embargo and cleared the way for hemp foods to appear on grocery shelves across the nation.
In recognition of Nutiva’s victory in this David vs. Goliath struggle, Fast Company magazine honored our company in March 2005. And in 2009, Inc. Magazine selected Nutiva as one of the year’s fastest-growing companies.
Nutiva continues to innovate with organic superfoods, including our Coconut Manna™, centrifuged Raw Coconut Oil, and Chia Seeds, all of which have unique health benefits.
From 2002 to 2010, Nutiva’s sales grew by a factor of ten. Our products are offered in 6,000 natural food stores and supermarkets in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Europe, as well as through this website.
A Values-driven Business
Nutiva brings higher standards of quality and ethics to the food industry. As John Roulac says, “We realize that making a reasonable profit enables the company to grow, yet profits can’t be placed above the health and welfare of people or the planet.”
Nutiva was one of the first food companies to place the Non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) symbol on its labels.
As an expression of its corporate citizenship, Nutiva donates 1 percent of its sales to organizations that promote sustainable agriculture, such as the Cornucopia Institute, Vote Hemp, and the Watts Garden Club.
