Nutiva ECO IQ #1 – Hemp Growing – Click for Answer

The subject of our first ECO IQ Quiz was Hemp Farming.  There is a lot of confusion right now about organic hemp farming.  To help you learn about hemp, we’ve created a page called “How Organic is Your Hemp Brand.

The question was:
Which Statement is Correct?
A – Hemp grows like a weed and does not need fertilizers
B – Non-organic farmers use chemical fertilizers
C – Organic hemp farmers rotate with green, nitrogen-fixing crops
D – All of the Above
E – Both A and C
F – Both B and C

The Correct answer is F: Both B and C.

Explanation:

This one was a little bit tricky, because hemp does tend to grow naturally in the wild without requiring a whole lot of attention, but the hemp that does grow wild and unattended does not have the nutrition levels to be useful as a food crop.  Unfertilized wild hemp also doesn’t provide the nitrogen necessary to enrich the soil it’s planted in.  Hemp fields do require fertilization in order to provide healthy and usable crops.

A lot of people chose D (All of the above), but Organic Farmers definitely do NOT use chemical fertilizers.

Winner:

This month’s winner is Tasha Martin. Congratulations Tasha, you’ve won yourself a $50 Gift Certificate good for use on our Organic Shelled Hempseed or any other product in the Nutiva Online Store!

It’s been my understanding that hemp is a green nitrogen fixing crop. That’s why you let the leaves fall to the ground. They add nitrogen back to the soil.

If answer A (Hemp grows like a weed and does not need fertilizers) is not correct then please tell me who it is that is fertilizing all the wild hemp that the DEA spends so much time trying to eradicate.

If answer A (Hemp grows like a weed and does not need fertilizers) is not correct then wouldn’t it make sense for the DEA to try and stop people from fertilizing the wild hemp?

    Death by Alfalfa

    Death by (of) Alfalfa

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced early this year (2011) that it will support the poisoning of the planet to an unpresidened degree and wipe out organic produce by pushing mutant sugar beets…

Alfalfa is grown on something like 3-400,000 farms on many millions of acres.
Over twenty billion pounds of alfalfa are harvested each year in the United States and most is cycled through the meat that humans eat.

That’s a lot of good ol’ U.S. prime farm land poisoned and a hell of a lot of Monsanto’s favorite poison, the flagship product romantically called ‘Roundup’ being sprayed and spread all around this beautiful land, so everyone can breathe it every day (no matter where you may live) and there will be plenty of ‘Glyphosate’ (the deadly poison, Roundup) to saturate lakes, rivers, wells, oceans, Momma’s milk and baby’s young body…

USDA Says Yes to Genetically Engineered Sugarbeets

While those of us working on the GMO invasion have been focused on the GMO alfalfa fiasco, the moratorium on the planting of GMO-ized sugar beets has been lifted.

The US Department of Agriculture last Friday gave farmers the go-ahead to resume planting Roundup Ready sugarbeets, claiming [GET THIS] “it’s the only way to avoid a nationwide shortage of sugar”…

We sometimes send out samples of Hemp Powder, but not the oil, as it comes in glass bottles, which are a bit expensive to ship. We don’t do whey protein powder.
