Some Nutiva Coconut Manna™ FAQs Answered

Post image for Some Nutiva Coconut Manna™ FAQs Answered

Hi Everybody,

Our Nutiva Coconut Manna™ product has been flying off the shelves, and has generated a lot of interest, and we’re thrilled.  We wanted to take a moment and answer a couple of questions that we’ve been getting recently, namely, “how do I get the product out of the 5lb bag”, and “how do I use Coconut Manna™.”

We put together a quick video to answer the first question.  The answer to the 2nd question is further down the page.  We’ll add new FAQs to this post as they continue to come in.

Thanks!

Q. Coconut Manna™: How does a person dispense the bulk 5lb Coconut Manna™?
A. The 5lb bulk bag of Nutiva Coconut Manna™ is primarily intended as a food service item. Its main use will be in restaurants and smoothie bars and in food service applications. This unit is not intended for the home user unless they have a strong food preparation background.

The product needs to be melted in its entirety, blended, then poured into smaller containers. If you melt and pour off only a portion; only the oil will be removed. This will result in the remaining material comprised mostly of coconut fiber and protein. If this sounds too challenging please start with our 15oz jar.

Q.  How Do I Use Coconut Manna™?
A.  Coconut Manna™ is great to use in various recipes as a replacement for milk, cream, yogurt or butter.  It’s delicious on top of or mixed into rice, oatmeal, cereals, and smoothies.  Some folks love it spread on toast or crackers (for a strong “coconut-ty” flavor.)

You may notice some oil has separated to the top of your jar or bag during shipping.  Simply warm all the way through, then stir the oil back in.  Or, spoon the oil from the top and use for cooking!  It’s your choice.  We generally recommend stirring the oil back into the Coconut Manna™.

NOTE: in colder climates, and during the cooler months, your Coconut Manna™ will tend to harden.  You can use a spoon to “chip” pieces of it and then serve, or you can place the jar in hot (but not boiling) water for a few moments.  Be sure not to burn the Manna™.

I use an empty coconut oil gallon tub for the manna. It fills the tub a bit over 1/2 full.

I’m confused. What exactly IS coconut manna? I’m not seeing any product info on that.

I make a yummy “candy”: 2 parts Coconut Manna, 1 part Coconut oil (does not have to be exact) Healthy chocolate bar or powder to taste. Melt these 3 together stirring until smooth. Stir in a pinch of salt, Xylitol and/or Agave and Vanilla to taste. Add sliced almonds (or nuts of your choice) large flake organic coconut. I also add Chia seed. Layer Flax, chia and/or hemp seed on parchment paper in pan. Pour in the candy. Sprinkle more seeds on top. Keep refrigerated until ready to consume.
Coconut oil is the only product that worked on my face and neck exzema! I went to 3 dermatologists over a period of 6 months using expensive and “warned” prescriptions. None worked. But the coconut oil did! yeah!

I have found the same thing with eczema. The only additive I can add to it for that is lavender. helps with the itch sometimes. other times just straight out of jar. It’s wonderful and probiotics.

Same…I have the coconut oil but am completely confused on the whole coconut manna thing. Somebody please explain what it is. Thanks.

Is this the same as Coconut Butter that comes in a jar or Creamed Coconut that usually comes in a little box and is super cheap?

    • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

Hi Anne. Our Coconut Manna is definitely in the “Coconut Butter” family of products, though we felt that its superior flavor warranted a new name.

  • Carolyn

how long does it keep, if I buy a 5 lb bag? what is the bag made of? is there any BPA in the coating/lining of the bag?

    • foleypod

      Hi Carolyn.
The shelf life for our Coconut Manna is one year.

The 5 lb bag contains no BPA, which is very important for us. Note: we generally recommend the 5lb bag for food service professionals, not so much for the consumer, as it is presents a few unique challenge that scare some folk.
Here’s a video which helps you out with the bulk bag, should you decide that’s the best option for you. http://nutiva.com/articles/some-nutiva-coconut-manna-faqs-answered/

Can you use coconut manna after the best by date if the jar has not been opened?

        • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

          We wouldn’t recommend that.

  • Carolyn

what is the bag made of? is it aluminum?

  • Carolyn

once the oil is mixed back in, will it separate back out if the jar is left on the counter in a warm kitchen? should it be refrigerated?

    • admin

It’s not necessary to refrigerate, though it will eventually separate again regardless of where you store it. Similar to peanut butter. I prefer to keep mine at room temperature. I tend to go through a jar of Manna quickly enough that I only have to mix it when I first open it.

  • Carrie

I just got my first jar of Coconut Manna and I love it. On a whim I decided to stuff dates with it and it’s become my favorite treat! Easy, healthy and guilt-free.

  • JBG

How much is a case of manna, and how to order it? A case is depicted on the manna page, but “case” is not listed as a choice to add to cart.

    • admin

      JBG,
Simply click on that “case” on the Manna cart page, and you’ll find yourself looking at bulk items. Also, in the cart section at the right, you’ll notice a green button which reads “Save Money – Buy in Cases!”. Click on that to reveal the case items. Thanks!

  • JBG

Exactly how is coconut manna made? Ie, what are the process steps between a pile of coconuts and some jars of manna? Where is the facility where manna is made?

  • David A Vance

What is the difference between coconut Manna and your coconut Oil? Please explain.

Also….I read above that the Manna is not a raw food. What does that mean? Is the coconut oil a raw food?

    • The Nutiva Team

      Hi David,
The Coconut Oil and Coconut Manna are very different products.

We’ve put detailed explanations about the products on their pages in our store. Check them out:
      Coconut Oil and Coconut Manna

The term “Raw” applies to foods that are processed without being cooked, or if they are heated as a requirement of their manufacture, do not exceed 115 degrees F.

We had a line of RAW Coconut Oil for a short time, which was very popular, but we pulled it due to supply issues. We’re working on reintroducing that line again in the upcoming months.

      • Aprilvonoelhoffen

I heard from a youtube video that Nutiva found out that their raw coconut was actually not raw, thus the reason it is now labeled organic…. ??? …

        • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

Nope. We’ve always had this Extra-Virgin Organic Coconut Oil. It was one of our original products.

We added a RAW Organic Coconut Oil to our product-line, but had to pull it after about 8 months when we started having problems with the supply chain. We’re actively seeking a new supply farm, but it’s been difficult finding one that will provide us with the level of quality that we require. Until then, we’ll be selling our original Extra-Virgin Organic Coconut Oil.

  • Tim

How is the manna prepared? Is it a cooked product? Does that destroy the “good stuff” in the coconut?

  • Jane

I devoured the whole jar in less than a week. Um… this morning. Considering that the Manna is the nearly only thing I have in my house other than dulse seaweed and bee pollen, I don’t feel entirely guilty.

  • Neva

Why is the “spout” looking thing there on the 5-lb bag? Instead of cutting the bag open, I would have thought one might use that as a pour-spout, after melting the manna.

Maybe it is there just for purpose of Nutiva filling the bag?

    • The Nutiva Team

      Hi Neva,
If you cut that “spout looking thing” off, you’d find yourself with one heck of a mess! That spout is how they get the Manna INTO the bag! It has a pump fixture on it, and doesn’t allow for the backward pass of the product back through it, thus the need to cut the top of the bag open.

PS: I tried it with the first bag. I didn’t film that one. Took me about 30 minutes to clean up the mess. Wasn’t fun~

Would like to get some of this.

I would like to know if Nutiva Coconut Manna is dairy free, Gluten-Free? I would love to try this product but I am on a strict Gluten-Diet….

    • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

Hi, there’s nothing in this product other than dried coconut flesh.

  • Kimnkim2001

Can coconut manna be used as a butter replacement and if so would the ratio be the same?

    • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

In baking? No, you’d be better to use Coconut Oil instead. Manna is great in baking, but it doesn’t behave like butter. Check out our recipes section and look for Manna recipes to see some of the things you can do with it.

  • Teresa

When using Manna to replace milk or cream, I’d like to know if the measurements are an even exchange?  And will it behave the same way as milk or cream, especially in confections?  Thanks!

    • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

No, Coconut Manna milk is not a 1 to 1 replacement for dairy milk or dairy cream. No nut milks really work that way. Even almond or Hemp milk is going to be different from Dairy Milk or Dairy Cream, especially in baking.

The only thing to do is trial and error. People who make their own nut milks are a lot more comfortable with this than people who do not.

One of the biggest reasons I use Manna Milk over most other nut milks, is because I can easily control its consistency by adding more or less Manna to the concoction, thusly effecting its thickness.

  • Michele K

Ok, I have seen the  video on how to dispense from the 5# bag of Coconut Manna. I’m wondering, after melting in warm water and kneading it, Can one also just cut off only a corner instead of the whole top, to pour more accurately?

    • http://nutiva.com/articles Nutiva Team

Sure, if you want to. I prefer to open the entire top so that I can get in there and stir it. I’m not sure how easily one can stir with only a small opening in the top. Kneading it is fine, but if you’re having to soak it in hot water (as in winter months) for a little while, it’s going to get a bit hot to the touch.
