Though many of use grew up using butter, shortening and vegetable oil as our staples, there are many new oils in town that are far superior for your health.
Did you know that most “vegetable oil” is actually just soybean oil? Though the name gives off the impression that it is a healthy alternative to other oils, the ingredient label will prove that soybean oil is all that is in the bottle. Most of the soybeans used to make vegetable oil are genetically modified, so by using vegetable oil, you may be consuming GMOs unwillingly. It’s time to cut this oil out of your diet! In addition to GMOs entering your kitchen through vegetable oil, most butter is made from milk that comes from cows being fed loads of feed full of GMOs like soybeans and corn.

Using Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is an incredibly versatile superfood that’s rightfully earning its place in pantries all over the world. It is rich in essential fatty acids (EFA’s) like omega-3 and lauric acid and is naturally cholesterol free. Nutiva’s coconut oil is never hydrogenated and we never use hexane to process the oil. In fact, our oil is cold pressed from coconuts at their peak ripeness to maintain their vital nutrients; you’ll never have to worry about bleach or chemicals in our certified organic coconut oil!
How can you replace butter with coconut oil? Easily! Coconut oil is a natural in nearly all recipes, whether it is used for sautéing, baking, in smoothies, or just spread on toast. To bake with coconut oil, replace butter by using a 1:1 ratio. Keep in mind that coconut oil will do best when other ingredients are at room temperature; it will get solid and clump if the other ingredients are too cold. Coconut oil is great in soups, stews and curries. We also love getting the benefits of coconut oil into our daily smoothies by simply scooping in a tablespoon. Coconut oil liquefies at 76 degrees, and is totally safe to consume in this state. It does not need to be refrigerated, but if you decide to refrigerate it, know that it will likely get rock hard. Using Hemp Oil
Another amazing superfood oil that is gaining steam in the food world is hemp oil. We love hemp products so much, that our name was actually inspired by the “nut” of the hemp plant! Because we believe in the amazing nutritional value of the seed, we don’t mess with nature. Our organic hemp oil is cold-pressed, and we never use chemicals to expel this amazing oil. This process allows the oil to retain its beneficial fiber, protein, anti-oxidants, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids like omega-3s.
Hemp oil is green in color and has a slightly nutty flavor. It is best used cold, and should be refrigerated to ensure freshness. You can use hemp oil in place of other oils to make salad dressings, add a spoonful to your smoothie or top your yogurt with it. Cooking with hemp may lead to a loss in the nutritional value, so it’s best to use this product cold.
Keep in mind that hemp is not the same as marijuana. The hemp that we use for our oil, seeds, and protein shakes contains no “drug” effects, so you can enjoy the nutritional benefits of hemp with out worrying about any unwanted side effects.
Using Red Palm Oil
Red Palm Oil is Nutiva’s newest certified organic oil, and we couldn’t be happier to add this ethically sourced oil to our family! Red palm oil (not to be confused with low-nutrient palm kernel oil) is rich in alpha and beta-carotene, which can be seen by its beautiful red color. Our body uses beta-carotene to make vitamin A, which has been touted as being essential for healthy eyesight and to promote growth. Our red palm oil is also a great source of non-GMO, soy-free vitamin E and anti-oxidants.
You can use red palm oil in place of butter if you are really craving that slight butter flavor. It tastes just right on popcorn or in any recipe that calls for medium-heat sautéing.
