Unrefined Coconut OilThe ingenuity of the human race can be quite astounding at times. When there are lots of particular products, as with coconuts, around, people will always find a way to make use of them in as many ways as possible. The coconut is a prime example of this ingenuity. Most people consider the coconut as food and that is its primary use for the most part. But in the Philippines, where the coconut grows in masses, the people have found a way to increase the yield of the coconut and also make some money from it. Unrefined coconut oil and the various products that come from it is one of the many other uses that they have found for the coconut. Unrefined coconut oil is extracted from dried coconut by pressing it from the fibers of the dried product. This unrefined oil is usually not fit for consumption and must be cleaned for other uses. There are various other uses for coconut oil. One of the newer revelations is that coconut oil can be used to aid weight loss. The anti-microbial effects of coconut oil has long since been known to people and has been used in various applications, but due to its tendency to also heighten cholesterol in high doses this area of use has not been fully explored. Recently, however, research has been done on the microbial effects as well as ways to curb the problems of high saturated fats found in almost all forms of coconut oil. Unrefined coconut oil has few uses for the most part but its refined counterpart has found uses in a number of interesting places. It is widely used in cooking especially in the cuisine of Kerala in the southwestern parts of India. In other South Asian countries it is used in a variety of dishes to add a distinct flavor to their dishes. Another area where coconut oil is often used is cosmetics and skin treatments. It is an excellent moisturizer and people in many parts of India use it to style their hair and to keep their skin soft and healthy. It even has a use in industries as a lubricant but also as fuel! As a biofuel, coconut oil that has been specifically produced from unrefined coconut oil can be used in a number of different applications. In 2007, coconut oil was used to power a Boeing 747 in an event sponsored by Virgin Atlantic. But while coconut oil may not be the best fuel for normal car engines, it is very useful in generators used for small communities outside of the city. In the Philippines, it is often used in this capacity to great effect. Whether as a fuel, a cosmetic, a medicine, or an ingredient, coconut oil has many uses. While the unrefined coconut oil is starting to see more uses it will be some time before it truly reaches its full potential. With so many coconuts in the tropics there is no reason not to use them and every single part of their flesh. |
