Nutiva
Shelled Hempseed
If you enjoy
our delicious shelled hempseed sold in the 10-oz pouches, consider buying
Nutiva's bulk 5-pound vacuum-sealed bags to save money and reduce packaging
waste. Eat 2-4 tablespoons daily by adding them to smoothies, cereal,
omelettes, yogurt, soups, salads, and vegetables. Fresh foods are always
more healthful. So, to extend shelf life when buying in bulk, pour one
pound of the seeds into a separate container for daily use, resealing
the bulk bag and storing it in the freezer to protect it from oxygenation.
Refill the smaller container as needed from the bulk bag stored in the
freezer.
Shelled hempseed
is 33% protein, and rich in Vitamin E as well Omega-3 and GLA -- the essential
fatty acids doctors recommend. Two tablespoons of shelled hempseed provide
the following RDAs: 10% of iron, 15% of zinc, 30% of phosphorus, and 30%
of magnesium.
You can
order bulk 5-pound bags of Nutiva hempseed at your health food store,
or by calling NE Supply in Vermont at (800) 232-1162 or Prolithic Sports
in California at (800) 969-6199.
An
update on organics: As many readers know, Nutiva has to import
its hempseed due to antiquated US laws preventing American farmers from
growing hemp (a non-drug crop). The 2004 crop suffered because of cold
temperatures and drought, and thus was smaller than expected. All of
our hemp oil, protein powder, and food bars are cerfied organic. We currently
offer organic seeds in a 10-oz pouch and seeds grown without pesticides
(but not certified organic) in both 10-oz and bulk 5-pound bags. We hope
to move to certified organic for our bulk seeds in 2006.

Backyard
Composting: Your Complete Guide to Recycling Yard Clippings
by John W. Roulac and Harmonious Technologies
96 pages,
ISBN 0-9629768-3-0, Published 1991, revised 9th Edition 1997
With
springtime coming, now is a good time to set up a compost pile in your
backyard. Back in 1991 I wrote and published Backyard
Composting. The book was well received and the timing perfect, coinciding
with a surge in interest in finding new (or perhaps old) ways of handling
America's growing heaps of trash. To date we have sold more than 900,000
copies, and the great success of this simple book has helped fund my hemp
ventures.
Why send
leaves, grass clippings, and banana peels to a landfill when you can easily
add them to a compost pile and enrich the earth at the same time? Here
are some early reviews of the original Backyard Composting.
"Everything
composters ever need to know." --The American Library Association
"Fun
as well as virtuous." --Los Angeles Times
"More
than 90 percent of our residents rated Backyard Composting as 'excellent'
or 'good' in our recent survey." --George Dreckmann, City of Madison,
Wisconsin

Walking
for Life
How many
hours a day do we spend staring at glaring lights on a screen? Is it any
wonder, then, that a record number of adults and children are obese?
A great way
to balance out our sitting time is to spend time walking. Yes, that simple
old standby excercise of walking, which is so easy to do. There's no need
to drive to the gym to get a workout--a 30-minute walk can play an important
role in your personal health. Whether you live in the city or the country,
try remembering to take some time to walk each day. It works the heart
and also (for rural dwellers or those with access to a park) gets us out
into nature.
