Discover
and Enjoy Delicious Shelled Hempseed
John
Roulac's favorite hemp food is shelled hempseeds— deliciously nutty
and nutritiously packed with 33 percent protein and 45 percent good fats,
along with minerals and vitamin E. Sales of our shelled hempseeds have
jumped by more than 50 percent in the past year as more and more people
learn about its many health benefits. Nutiva also offers vacuum-packed
5-pound bags of seeds, so ask your local health food store for Nutiva
bulk seeds.
Our shelled
hempseeds are 100 percent raw, and grown by Canadian farmers without
pesticides or herbicides. Shelled hempseeds look like sesame seeds and
taste like pine nuts.
Shelled hempseeds
can be enjoyed plain or as a super-nutritious condiment for cooking and
baking. Add Nutiva's shelled seeds to cereal, omelets, yogurt, soups,
snacks, dips, smoothies, salads, pasta, veggies, sauces, dressings, and
desserts.
To ensure
freshness and extend their shelf life, it's best to keep the seeds air-tight
and refrigerated. Discover

Court
Rules Hemp Foods Legal
On February
6, 2004, the Federal 9th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the US DEA's
proposed ban on hemp food. This is the industry's fourth straight legal
victory. The DEA has the option to appeal the case to the Supreme Court,
so stay tuned . . .
Back on
October 9, 2001, Nutiva, along with the Hemp Industries Association, Dr.
Bronner's, and Nature's Path, sued the US DEA to stop proposed rules which
would have banned the sale of hemp foods. Many thanks to Dr. Bronner's
for generously providing the bulk of the legal fees. And check out the
amazing new hemp Alpsnack bar
from Dr. Bronner's.
The San
Jose Mercury News reported:
.
. . Nowhere was the decision by San Francisco's 9th Circuit Court of Appeals
more hailed than in California, home to more hemp food manufacturers than
any other state.
"It's a
great day for us, and I'm looking forward to offering hemp foods without
having the shadow of government trying to slow us down," said John Roulac,
a plaintiff and founder of Nutiva, a Sebastopol, Calif., company that
makes hemp-food bars.

Donation Spotlight: Bioneers
This
past October, more than 6,000 attendees gathered at the 14th annual Bioneers
event, seeking to "improve the environment by changing the world." Besides
producing this seminal conference, Bioneers produces a radio series, provides
vital grants to worthy projects, including the Iroquois White Corn project,
and has helped launch a new collaborative group: "Unreasonable Women for
the Earth."
Bioneers
is one of the many wonderful groups promoting sustainable agriculture
to which Nutiva donates 1 percent of its sales. We're delighted to support
groups that are actively improving our soils and our health, as well as
the sacred biodiversity of life.

Review The
Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil
By Bruce Fife,
N.D. - 192 pages - Copyright 2001 - ISBN 0-9-941599-51-5 - www.piccadillybooks.com
To read
earlier press coverage of coconut oil, one would think it an artery-clogging,
cholesterol-producing enemy of health. Nothing could be further from
the truth! The fact is that coconut oil is the best all-purpose cooking
oil, is cholesterol-free, and has numerous health benefits.
Author Bruce
Fife does an excellent job of explaining the differences between coconut's
saturated medium-chain "good fats" and unsaturated long-chain vegetable
oils such as soy and canola.
The Healing
Miracles of Coconut Oil lists numerous medical studies on the antimicrobial
and antiviral benefits of lauric acid, a unique fat found in coconut
and palm oils as well as in mothers milk. Useful recipes round out this
great primer on coconut oil.

Processing
Soy with Hexane, an Industrial Solvent
Anyone who
consumes soy foods may well benefit from learning more about the way many
soy foods are processed.
Ever wondered
why soy burgers and soymilk are organic but soy protein isolate (used
in bars, burgers, protein powders, etc.) is not? In researching this question,
we've discovered that non-organic soy protein isolate is often processed
with hexane, a petroleum solvent similar to gasoline. Besides being a
potential health hazard in food, hexane is a significant greenhouse gas. To learn
