Issue 20 — October 2006

John RoulacGreetings!

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the 2006 California Hemp Farming Act. Unfortunately, the influence of the law enforcement lobby won out over the hemp industry. Despite the fact that no law enforcement concerns have arisen in over 30 countries where industrial hemp is currently grown. Our opponents stated that there is no reason to grow hemp in America because there is so little market demand for hemp products. The truth is that archaic laws prevent entrepreneurs access to cost effective raw materials that they could develop into hundreds of products. Total hemp acres planted in Canada have risen from less than ten-thousand in 2004 to over thirty-thousand acres in 2006.

You can help the hemp industry reach one-hundred-thousand acres planted in Canada by 2010 by continuing your purchase of hemp foods.

We of course would have preferred a victory. Yet the fact that it passed both legislative houses and resulted in high profile publicity for Nutiva and the hemp industry in the LA Times, NY Times, CBS, PBS (a 7 minute feature on Nutiva and the hemp bill), and KPFK (a 1 hour radio interview with John W Roulac) is a huge victory in itself.

Thanks to the many Nutiva customers who have helped keep the company growing during our numerous challenges. Thanks also to those who supported this historic legislation.

With your support, Nutiva will continue to double its annual sales and develop the marketplace. Ultimately, the commercial success of hemp will surely trump timid politicians.

Have a great fall!

In health,

John W. Roulac

Organic Superfoods: Ingredients like hemp, blueberries, pomegranates, açai and goji berries, ramon nuts, maca root, and mesquite pods provide Omega-3 EFAs, protein, minerals, and antioxidants.

Fiber Power: Our shakes are packed with insoluble fiber from hemp and soluble fiber from inulin for good digestion.

Rain Forest Protection: Our use of acai berries and Brazil nuts from the Amazon rain forest and ramon nuts, a staple food of the Maya, from the Maya Biosphere Reserve, provides extra income for indigenous peoples and promotes environmental stewardship, helping to protect these majestic ecosystems.

Non-GMO and No Petroleum Solvents: Most nonorganic soy shakes are processed with hexane, a harsh solvent similar to gasoline, and sweetened with fructose or maltodextrin from genetically modified, pesticide-laden corn. Not so for Nutiva!

No Scoops in HempShakes™!: And what we save in plastic, we donate in nutritious HempShakes™ to support good health for families, such as those of the Lakota Nation.

1% Donation Spotlight

The Cornucopia Institute

Nutiva donates 1 percent of its sales to groups supporting sustainable agriculture. These groups' activities range from community gardens through GMO labeling to the banning of toxic pesticides or mutated gene fragments. In 2006, Nutiva will donate fifty-thousand dollars to these programs.

This month we're delighted to honor The Cornucopia Institute (TCI).

TCI is dedicated to the fight for economic justice for the family-scale farming community. Their goal is to empower farmers both politically and through marketplace initiatives. Their Organic Integrity Project acts as a corporate watchdog assuring that no compromises to the credibility of organic farming methods and the food it produces are made in the pursuit of profit. An example of their exemplary work is the recent expose’ on Wal-Mart’s private label organic milk manufactured by industrial-scale dairies with thousands of cows confined in feedlot-like conditions.

All The Kings Men

Starring: Sean Penn, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, James Gandolfini & Anthony Hopkins Directed By: Steven Zaillian

A must see political film for our time with Oscar caliber performance by Sean Penn.

Synopsis: All the King's Men (2006)

The legacy of a populist Southern politician whose lofty ambitions for the future leave him open to corruption and scandal is detailed as author Robert Penn Warren's thinly veiled portrait of Depression-era Louisiana governor Huey Long. Willie Stark (Sean Penn) is a man of the people, and for the people; at least that's what he tells the people. Propelled into a race for governor by opposing forces looking to split the "hick vote," Stark is convinced by handler -- as well as by young journalist Jack Burden (Jude Law) -- to not cow-tow to the powers that be. His rhetoric grows firey, and makes his way into office on a not-so-solid foundation of social-service promises. When idealism gives way to the harsh realities of the time, however, the fast-talking politico is quick to discover just how far one can fall when ambition and power leads to a betrayal of one's original motivations. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
