Issue 3 - April 2004

Greetings!

I hope you're enjoying the warming days and are taking some time to celebrate the change of seasons. Speaking of celebrations, Nutiva recently threw three hemp food victory parties in California--and, amid the fun, raised hundreds of dollars to help cover legal efforts for votehemp.com.

The DEA requested that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals hold another hearing on hemp foods.

Fortunately for Nutiva and the hemp industry, the agency was a day late and a dollar short, though, as the Court rejected their baseless motion for an appeal of the Court's February 6, 2004 ruling. The DEA's remaining option is to attempt to appeal the case to the Supreme Court--a highly unlikely move. Of course, who knows what was said between Justice Scalia and the Vice President in that duck hunting blind last winter? After all, the aim to designate a hemp snack bar as Schedule One (the same as heroin) must have some national security implications for our esteemed leaders to be concerned with.

Luckily for Nutiva customers, the 9th Circuit ruled that healthful hemp foods are legal. Who knew that some tasty seeds and organic whole-food bars would keep the night oil burning so long for Justice Department attorneys? And when they go to bed, they must lie awake imagining the dangers to our society if such nutritional foods are stocked on market shelves for the next 1,000 years.

I thank you for your sympathetic interest in following the irony of one man's journey to create America's leading hemp foods brand!

In health,
John W. Roulac

Enjoy Raw Organic Hemp Protein Powder

Imagine an organic food packed with 37% protein, 43% fiber, 0% "net" carbs, 9% beneficial fats, chlorophyll, vitamin E, and iron. Then get some of Nutiva's amazing raw hemp protein powder to enjoy with your favorite fruit or juice. This healthful, certified-organic powder contains no soy, gluten, or hexane.

Ever wonder why soy burgers and soy milk are organic but soy protein isolate is not? Non-organic soy protein isolate is often processed with hexane, a petroleum solvent similar to gasoline. Traditionally, natural food manufacturers have used only expeller-pressed oils and fats, which do not involve the use of hexane in the crushing process. Yet hexane-processed residual soy meal is used in many soy protein powders, cereals, and bars sold in natural food stores.

In choosing a protein powder, buy one that displays the USDA organic symbol, as hexane is prohibited in foods that contain 95% or more organic ingredients. Naturally, we hope you'll choose Nutiva's raw hemp protein powder! Hemp's superior 66% edistin and 33% albumin protein structure is the highest in the plant kingdom, making it an optimal protein source.
